The week of June 9-15 is National Men’s Health Week, and it’s a good time for all men to take some easy steps to improve their health. Even if you have suffered from a stroke or another disability recently, there are things you can do to improve your health.

Sleep More

Lack of sleep is related to several chronic diseases and conditions, such as depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Not getting enough sleep also can cause car accidents and machinery-related accidents. Generally, adult males need 7-9 hours of sleep per day. If you are recovering from a stroke, you may need more sleep to help your body in the healing process.

Don’t Smoke

It is never too late to give up the habit. If you stop smoking, your body will enjoy many benefits, both long term and immediate. Your risk of heart disease, cancer and lung disease will drop a lot. Also, you should try not to be around secondhand smoke. CDC research shows that inhaling the smoke of other people can cause cancer and other lung problems. Babies and children are still growing, so secondhand smoke really can harm them.

Exercise More

Healthy adults should engage in 2.5 hours of aerobic activity per week at least, such as jogging or fast walking. They also should do muscle strengthening exercises that work all of the major muscle groups. It is not necessary to do it all at once; you can break your exercises into smaller chunks throughout the week. If you have had a stroke, your ability to exercise could be affected. Still, it is important for you to try to stay as active as you can, as it helps the healing process, as well as improves your overall health.

Eat Well

You should eat many fruits and vegetables every day, and try to limit sugar, salt and fat.

Reduce Stress

If you have too much stress in your life, it can negatively affect your blood pressure and mood, among other things. Regular exercise is an effective way to manage stress.
