Many of the recent studies of older adults often focus on aspects of aging that are negative, such as higher rates of disease and less independence. But there is actually plenty of good news too. Life for senior citizens also is more than just worrying about health. According to a recent report in USA Today, things are looking bright for Americans over 60.
Based upon a survey of people from 45-69, USA Today focused on the responses of people over 60 to see how they are living and faring. For the most part, the respondents seemed to be doing well. More than 50% of them did not think that turning 60 was a major event. Those who did say it was a big deal felt that overall it was a good thing, and 3/4 said that they were happy to be 60, and 65 percent said they were wiser.
Many seniors over 60 report being happy and in good health.
Naturally, there was not all good news. Many of the reported problems had to do with health, but those were a relatively small number. Most of the seniors who responded said they were not bothered with major health problems. And 61% said their health was good, with 14% saying it was excellent. Only 4% said they were in poor health.
The most common reported health problems were hypertension, which affected almost 50% of those who responded. High cholesterol was a problem for 43%. It should be noted here that hypertension and high cholesterol are two risk factors for stroke. If you have either of these problems, you should speak to your medical professional and work out an action plan to get them under control.
One of the reasons that those over 60 do not seem as concerned about health as you might think is that more seniors are taking better care of themselves. About 40% of the respondents said that they exercise several times per week. People past 60 said that they were happy with the amount of exercise they get, and were happier than people in their 40s. Getting regular exercise also helps to prevent stroke and heart disease, so this aspect of the report is a very positive development!
